A passion for photography
Photography is an amazingly versatile art or craft, depending on how you practice it. This site is a kind of eulogy for photography, all forms of it.
Landscape
My first passion. One of the most accessible kinds of photography. f/11 and be there. All about the right light and conditions. Everything else is optional.
Portrait
The art of revealing one’s inner self. Way more difficult than it sounds. All about light and expression, sometimes about context.
Abstract
Film can only display reality, but that doesn’t necessarily limit creativity. In some images, the link with reality is lost and the lines, shapes, textures or colours take on their own meaning.
Street
Raw and realistic, unpolished and voyeuristic. Displays life as it is, might mature of time like good wine.
Out-of-context
Photography can isolate and reveal aspects of an object or situation which would otherwise remain hidden.
Architectural
Transforms cityscapes into art.
It’s all about the light
Even meaningless scenes can be compelling, provided the right is light. In the scene below, water took on mercury-like qualities in the evening light.
Although it remains a rather ordinary picture of a swan, it somehow reminds me of the last part of a Housman poem:
Ensanguining the skies
How heavily it dies
Into the west away
Past touch and sight and sound
Not further to be found,
How hopeless under ground
falls the remorseful day.
Line of sight
- If the light’s not great, composition, emotion or symbolism come to the rescue
